Monkey Free Day

I’m taking back this day and making it something special!

Today’s is not just any other day anyway – it’s Jason’s birthday and so work night be damned, we are partying tonight!

We are off to Croc’s downtown to celebrate with some drinks and some karaoke.

This day will forever be known as the one and only Jason’s birthday.

And monkey’s be damned. Stoopid poopy creatures.

Camping For Dummies

Well we are off… camping for the weekend. We are making camp at the beautiful Camp Gaya for four days and three nights.

We are driving eight hours to get there…. I’ve only had three hours of sleep… because it was Jeremy’s 37th birthday yesterday… and I stayed up until 130ish am… and got up at 5am to work…

Embrace Diversity

So it’s June again – and that means Gay Pride is right around the corner for Denver.

I usually go with my gay husbands in support of their gayness. Well, and to be honest, their effervesence in sharing this day with those they love is addictive – I always have the gayest time with them.

I was reflecting on past Gay Pride and remembered Pride 2005. The usual suspects were on parade that day – including those activists who consider anything that goes against their God’s will evil. Apparently homosexuality is an affront to the Lord – were you aware of this?

At any rate, there was the usual group of dissidents in front of the local Catholic church that happens to be in the parade’s path. They had their usual signs up… and then I saw a NEW sign… and it made me giggle. I’m sure that was not the intent.

It read, “Diversity Is Perversity.”

I suppose I should’ve been incensed and outraged. But I couldn’t be. Because what sane, intelligent person would write this sign? Unless he was a Nazi. Oo wait can I say that and be politically correct?

Diversity is perversity. Can you imagine? I bet the person who wrote this sign considered themselves so clever…

I’m going to stand in the same spot during this year’s parade, just to see if that sign is still appearing proudly.

Mardi Gras Is In The Air

Actual conversation with my gay, faux boyfriend over the phone:

Poodle: This next weekend is Mardi Gras in Saint Louis.

Me: Oh that’s right! Are you actually going out?

Poodle: Yes.

Me: Oh that’s right! The city closes down at 8pm so you can go to bed at your regular weekend time, huh? It doesn’t really disrupt your old man ways…

Poodle: I’m going to cut you the next time I see you.

Me: (giggling) Nice.

That’s So Gay

I was taking to a gay man friend of mine about being gay and what it means to an individual to come out after hiding it for so many years. Because I mentioned I didn’t understand why people had to make such a big deal about coming out… that I found it as exasperating as straight folks being so scared of it.

“To me,” I said, “It is almost like gay people have this chip on their shoulder when it comes to being gay and being accepted. I don’t really understand why you have to carry around a flag and proclaim your gayness to anyone who will listen. So, you’re gay. I don’t give a flying fuck. What I care about is the person behind the gayness… are you nice? Do you treat people well? Who you are despite your gayness – or your straightness for that matter – is what matters to me.”

“You have to understand for many of us there is a freedom in coming out. I’d pretended for so long that I was straight and that I liked women when deep down I knew what I really liked was men. So when I was finally able to admit it not only to myself, but to those around me, it was liberating. And I wanted everyone to know, so fuck them! Because being gay is so stigmatized, you expect to not be accepted and it makes you want to shove it down their throat.”

“I still don’t get it,” I said, though I understood. I just didn’t agree. The train of thought seems silly and destructive. It doesn’t benefit either party – neither the gay person wanting acceptance, nor the ignorant person who doesn’t understand that a person’s sexual preferences has nothing to do with their integrity and worthiness as a human.

If you are secure in yourself, you don’t have to own the label that explains a part of yourself in order to be comfortable in your own skin. You don’t have to carry a flag, or proclaim yourself part of one group, or consider yourself better because you like one way of life over another. All these silly, petty label wars seem inconsequential if you know yourself.

I don’t need you to know I’m bi or that I like peanut butter kisses or that I have a loving style different than yours. I like to share them with you because they are parts of me and they are fun to share. And I like to share. But I will never use who I am to make myself better than others. Nor will I pick up a flag and march in a parade to prove who I am . It’s just not me.
