Is poly going mainstream? Twice in the last few weeks, poly has gotten a mention on prime time television. The first was a little comedy called War At Home. Of course, the show mentioned poly in the same breath as swinging and used both to describe neighbors who were exploring ways to spice up their marriage. The main characters of this show could not see themselves being poly.
The second mention was this past Monday on Studio 60, in a show titled “Monday.” One of the characters bid on a dinner for teen abstinence to join his love interest at the dinner. Since he is fundamentally opposed to teen abstinence, he asked his assistant to find an organization that did the opposite – one that encourages sex.
His assistant’s answer to that request – “Loving More. A non-profit organization to promote the national polyamorous movement.”
Okay so both mentions should hardly have the poly community jumping for joy since neither are flattering. But at least there is acknowledgement… right?
Or is the poly movement like music – in that if it goes mainstream, it ain’t as cool? Hmmm…
