If Life is a Bowl of Cherries…

January 21, 2007

My page title has a certain tongue-in-cheek charm to it that may be lost on some. It’s an existential thought to a tee, that’s for sure.

What is existentialism? And what am I trying to tell you by naming my blog after its concept? Well I guess that’s for me to know and you to find out. Or more accurately for both of us to find out.

Buddism is a form of existentialism and has strong roots in the belief that life is pain and that the only way to give meaning to life is to eliminate pain. The path to eliminate pain is by finding yourself through deep thought and even meditation. Of course, Buddism also believes the only way to find oneself is to rise up above all human feelings such as jealousy, despair, envy, pride, love, deceit, greed, hate… you get my point. In Buddism, the greatest victory one can have is the victory over oneself.

I can’t pretend to aspire to be a Buddha though I may long for such thoughts. Alas I am all too human. So I must strive for other meaning in my own life. One of the things that has always struck me is the inherent contradictions we, as humans, tend to bring into our lives. And I am no exception. There is a certain irony to the fact that we all strive for happiness, but we are the very thing that prevents us from achieving that happiness.

As they say, there are but two tragedies in life; one is not getting your heart’s desire and the other is to get it.

As I said, Life. It is just one damn thing after another.

Welcome to my blog.
